Those of you following my blog know I’ve been visiting and re-visiting the theme of forgiveness lately.
In part because–honestly–the only way I can bring myself to forgive sometimes is to keep going back to the idea.
The first time I think about forgiveness, I’m not very committed.
I think maybe I can scrape by being “civil”.
I convince [...]

So I’m still not a vegetarian.
But I tried my 1st fast-food veggie burger.
It tasted like a giant bean.
Which is to say, it tasted alright.
If you like big thick, bean cake with your pickles.
Long story short: it might have to grow on me.
Any suggestions for spicing up said-bean-patty (that do not involve sprinkling hamburger meat on it, although [...]

So, not that many years ago, I was enviro-oblivious.
One of those Americans who doesn’t think of themselves as particularly wasteful, but whose garbage can was always mysteriously refilled as soon as it was emptied.
Then one day I made some changes.
They weren’t anything catastrophic.
I didn’t chain myself to any trees on the chopping block. I have [...]

If you’re like me, you’ve been around the church block a time or two.
You know the lingo.
Redemption, sanctification, all that jazz…
But every once in a while, a new term sneaks onto the scene.
One of these, for me, has been the concept of “spiritual direction”–a term that started popping up in my circles over the last [...]

Quite a while back,my friend Cameron–who is currently stationed with the Peace Corps in Cape Verde (Africa)–blogged about an ancient African ritual.
He said that when a person violated tribal rule, instead of shaming the person, they put the offender in the center of the village and the entire tribe gathered around that person in a [...]

First, a big thanks to Chris Fabry listeners who are stopping by the blog today.
(For those of you who aren’t up on the name, Chris is the host of a national radio show called Chris Fabry Live.)
Earlier today, Chris left me a voicemail and asked if I was cool with taking his interview with me [...]

Something is missing in my new memoir, Picking Dandelions: A Search for Eden Among Life’s Weeds.
The book is a collection of funny, quirky, struggling stories about trying to weed out life’s flaws to make room for the good stuff to grow.
But one of the flaws that I need to kick to the curb didn’t make [...]

Every day on the way home from work, I pass the most spectacular crossing guard on the planet.
Really.
I would put him up against any crossing guard in the country.
Not only is he vigilant about getting the kids across the street safely, but he’s ecstatic about it.
He maneuvers his flags, complimented by beaming smiles, as if [...]

Something I’ve noticed: when we find ourselves in conflict with other people, many of us suddenly become psychiatrists.
We assess the other’s person’s state of health.
They are needy.
Co-dependent.
Obsessive-compulsive.
And don’t forget passive-aggressive.
(I can’t tell you how many very objective divorcees claim the medical field missed their ex’s “bi-polar” disorder.)
Why do we pick people apart like that, do [...]

Has anyone else noticed the recent drive-thru makeovers at several fast food chains? (Not that I’m the instant-gratification-type who chronically orders fast food…or the type that gravitates like a magnet toward the Sweet Teas calling out to me from the nearest carry-out window. I’ve just heard about it.)
Before the makeover…
My car rolls over the sensor [...]
