11 Best Apps to Meet Up in Real Life

Even though I finally caved and snatched up an iPhone for Christmas last year, it’s far from surgically attached to my hand.

The up-side of that is if I’m spending time with you, it’s about YOU. Texters stand aside.

The down-side, much to the bewilderment of my more tech-lovin’ friends, is  I’m famous for accidentally leaving my phone at home.

Whoops. At least my dog has access to good technology.

As follows, I currently indulge in all of 7 apps. (Over the top. I know.)

But because I’m such a collaboration lover, I’m branching out to test a few apps that supposedly stir up real life connections. **And yes, I’ll be careful with the stranger-piece.**

11 Best Apps to Meet Up in Real Life

1. Weeels

Weeels is a new iPhone app that helps you find someone to share cab costs. It launched in New York, but will be expanding to other cities soon. [Read an  interview about it here.]

2. Planely

Planely helps you run into friends who may be flying at the same time or through the same airport. You can also use it to meet new people.

3. Happening

Happening lets you find and RSVP for events in your area.

4. Box

Box lets you view and share files or folders you upload to Box.net.

5. Smart Recorder

Smart Recorder lets you record, group, and share audio-files.

6. Meetup

Meetup helps you meet groups of people who share a specific interest, like writing or blogging.

7. JoggingBuddy

JoggingBuddy helps you find a running partner or group in your area.

8. Local Reuse

Local Reuse helps you connect reusable items with people who want them. (Or if you have a use for reused items, it helps you find them.)

9. MeetMe

Meet Me lets you input your location and a friend’s location and find spots to meet that are exactly in the middle.

10.Unsocial

If you’re at an event, Unsocial will help you find someone with a specific interest at that event. Say you’re at a blogger event and you’re looking for a web designer? This is your app.

11. Grubwithus

Grubwithus sets up “family-style” meals. They can be grouped around a topic or random.

I’ll be reporting back on how these ones work out. But in the meantime, have you tried any of them? I’d love to hear about your experience. Or, if you know of a collaborative app that’s not listed, feel free to leave it in the comments section.

Lastly, an oldie but goodie. Words With Friends.

    Agreed – Grubwithus is awesome.
Also check out StreetSpark – aggregates your social networking activity and introduces you to people who share the same interests. Helps take the online offline and gives you something to talk about when you meet in person.

Check out Syncuz (iPhone and Android), create an event, invite your guests and share a map with messages all on one screen.
Syncuz – map, message, meet – all on one screen

I am using Buy Me A Drink. Its a new nightlife socializing app. Its really cool for meeting people on the spot when you go out and you need a break the ice excuse to connect. They also give you free music downloads for using the app instead of badges.
