Surround Yourself With Good People

weekend photos, images, graphics, pics

It’s Friday. (But you knew that, right?) Here are three articles that got my attention this week. Now go. Go drink deep of your weekend.

Oh, Kristen Howerton, you said it so well. Down with firepitting!

We’ve got a new metaphor in our house to describe a bad habit that we often fall into. We’re calling it “firepitting.”

It’s one of those things that a lot of people do . . . that tendency to live your best life when others are around. A prime example of this is our backyard firepit. We pull it out almost every time we have guests over. We love sitting around it, listening to music, talking, or roasting marshmallows.

But here’s the thing: we NEVER pull that firepit out just for our kids. We never set up the firepit after the kids have gone to bed and enjoy some wine just as a couple. It’s a thing we do when other people are over.

This one is sad. Especially for those of us who’ve sunk a lot of time into the kids of our world. But it’s true-sad. And the sad part might help us remember what’s true more often.

Stephen was the one, for me. The one who embodied all the failures of a system so broken that to heal it would take far more than the casts that heal the literal broken bones of the children growing up within it.

They break, you know. These kids we leave behind. Eventually they break.

November is National Adoption Month. For information on adoption from the foster care system, visit the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.

Last, here’s a little perspective for your weekend: When I laugh at this, it’s a red-handed laugh. I’m rolling my eyes at how true this can sometimes be for me.
