That Day a Stranger Folded YOUR Laundry

That Day a Stranger Folded Your Laundry

I love to write on all things friendship. To me, that includes all sorts of little acts of neighborliness (like the one below) as well as attention to the everyday rituals and kindnesses that tie a community (or even a nation) together.

Things that encourage us away from divisive categories, like us vs. them and “those people“. Things that help us better understand people unlike ourselves (like 5 Lies You’ve Been Told About the Poor).

Within that, I often write about how much the faith world has to offer when it comes to understanding friendship. And that sometimes touches, for example, on how I am hopeful that people of faith will learn to express their beliefs in ways that aren’t intentionally inflammatory and attacking toward others. It seems like a simple thing to ask of people who claim to bear up God in their daily schedules. But really, it’s a complicated challenge to call people to. (Try When Christians Turn Facebook Into Hatebook or Angry In the Name of Jesus, for starters.)

But a lot of times, in between heady posts and calls for change, the things that best reflect faith and friendship are ordinary graces like this woman was shown. I celebrate them here.

From the New York Times:

Dear Diary:

My laundry had been occupying two big dryers in the building’s basement laundry room all afternoon while I ran errands and juggled conference calls. But instead of finding it piled in a heap on a bench, as usually happens when another tenant is impatient for dryer space, I saw an older woman serenely folding my towels, sheets and underwear.

“Excuse me, is that my laundry you’re folding?” I asked, stupidly; because of course it was.

Read the simple good that was gifted to her by this neighbor in the rest of the post at the New York Times.

Things like these always make me feel much better about the world in general. I love getting reminded that everything isn’t necessarily hate and divisiveness.

Me too. It’s nice to hear that there is good happening in the world every day beyond what we are aware of in our own local area. :)

The success of palace on Wheels tempted the tourism ministry of Rajasthan to introduce another luxury vehicle called Royal Rajasthan on Wheels. This luxury train was first set for royal voyage in January 2009. Today, this train operates weekly; it departs from Safdarjung Railway station for seven nights and eight days tour of various Rajasthani cities and returns to the same stop.
